Summary
Uchuu Senkan Yamato on the WonderSwan Color blends classic turn‑based tactics with quick‑fire shoot‑em‑up bursts. You command a fleet across a grid, inching forward a few spaces at a time until an enemy appears, at which point the game flips into a frantic side‑scrolling duel. Success hinges on keeping your Cosmo Tigers alive during these reflex tests, as each loss brings the overall mission closer to failure.
The combat system feels like a nod to the series’ iconic space battles, letting you plan positioning before the chaos erupts. While the strategic layer lets you weigh routes and prioritize targets, the shoot‑em‑up segments demand precise timing and a steady hand, creating a satisfying rhythm between thought and action.
Developed by Tom Create and published by Bandai Visual, the title arrived in Japan in 2001, continuing a legacy that began with earlier Space Battleship Yamato games in the mid‑80s and early‑90s. Those predecessors also mixed turn‑based movement with arcade‑style encounters, but the WonderSwan version refines the formula for a handheld audience.
For anyone who enjoys juggling strategic planning with arcade flair, Uchuu Senkan Yamato offers a compact yet deep experience that captures the spirit of the beloved anime while delivering a uniquely handheld challenge.
Storyline
Uchuu Senkan Yamato (often called Space Battleship Yamato) is a WonderSwan Color title that retells the classic 2199 anime plot. Earth is under a five‑year bombardment by the alien Gamilons, and the last surviving fleet—led by Captain Juzo Okita on the Kongou and Mamoru Kodai on the Yukikaze— retreats toward Pluto. After a desperate battle, an unknown craft crashes on Mars, prompting cadets Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima to retrieve a capsule containing a message from Queen Starsha of Iscandar. The transmission reveals a plan to build a Wave Motion Engine and its powerful Wave Motion Cannon, the only technology capable of reaching Iscandar and obtaining the Cosmo DNA needed to cleanse Earth’s radiation.
The Earth Defense Force rebuilds the WWII battleship Yamato in secret, hiding it beneath wreckage until a Gamilon scout forces an emergency launch. The crew, with Kodai as tactical chief, fires the ship’s shock cannons at the incoming Ultra Menace Missile, surviving the blast and beginning a year‑long race against the planet’s death timer. The Yamato then performs a series of dimensional warps, first to the Moon, then Mars, and finally into Jupiter’s turbulent atmosphere.
While battling Jupiter’s gravity, the Yamato discovers a floating Gamilon continent and, after a fierce fighter skirmish, unleashes the Wave Motion Gun for the first time. The blast obliterates the floating base, wiping out the Gamilon forces there and demonstrating the ship’s ultimate weapon as the crew continues its perilous journey toward Iscandar.
