Summary
Romancing SaGa on the WonderSwan Color slips the beloved Free Scenario System into a hand‑held format, preserving the series’ hallmark freedom of choice. Players can pick from eight distinct protagonists, each heading toward the same overarching goal while carving very different routes through Mardias. Battles unfold on a 3×3 formation grid, with character growth driven by the actions you perform rather than traditional experience points.
The 2001 WonderSwan port added a handy dash mechanic that lets you skirt random enemy encounters, plus a brand‑new scenario and a side‑quest to gather all ten Destiny Stones. Packaged as part of Square’s "Square Masterpiece" line, it keeps the original balance intact while giving portable fans a fresh way to explore the game’s open‑ended adventure.
Storyline
Romancing SaGa on the WonderSwan Color drops you into the world of Mardias, a realm scarred by an ancient war between three evil gods—Death, Saruin, and Schirach—and the benevolent deity Elore. A millennium after the conflict, Death and Schirich lost their powers while Saruin was sealed inside ten Fatestones, thanks to the hero Mirsa’s sacrifice. The Fatestones have since shattered, and darkness stirs to free Saruin once more.
The game lets you recruit eight main protagonists—Albert, Aisha, Jamil, Claudia, Hawk, Sif, Gray, and Barbara—each chasing personal goals that inevitably pull them into the quest to recover the scattered Fatestones. Along the way you can also enlist a host of side characters such as the Minstrel, Diana, Neidhart, Raphael, and many others.
When enough Fatestones are gathered, the Minstrel—an avatar of Elore—guides the chosen hero to confront the reawakened Saruin. Defeating him clears the story, and completing the game with all eight leads to a final scene where the party gathers, talks, and sets off together under the Minstrel’s watch.
