Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys
1993 Role-Playing
Vasteel drops you into a hex‑based battlefield where every move feels like a chess match played on a war‑torn continent. You command either Stefan’s or Faliall’s forces, pushing through top‑down maps that reward careful positioning and bold advances. The hex grid makes flanking and terrain exploitation feel tangible, while the constant tug‑of‑war over enemy cities adds a layer of strategic urgency. I love how the game balances the raw power of two rival brothers with the gritty reality of a single survivor trying to outmaneuver the opposition. The result is a deep, tactical experience that feels fresh even after countless hours of hex‑grid warfare.
Vasteel, the TurboGrafx‑CD adventure, is set in the Vasteel Solar System, where the planet Belose is ruled by the Faracia dynasty. For centuries the Faracia emperors have held power, but the last ruler proved deeply unpopular, sparking talk of reform among the populace.
When the ailing emperor suddenly dies, his elder son Faliall is named heir, while his younger brother Stefan sympathizes with the common folk and seeks change. The clash of ideals erupts into a bloody civil war, pitting Faliall’s claim to the throne against Stefan’s vision of justice. Players are drawn into this struggle for power and the fate of Belose.
