Summary
Super Darius, the TurboGrafx‑CD incarnation of the classic Darius shooter, manages to sound exactly like the arcade original – the CD tracks were ripped straight from the game’s own PCB. Players still glide through the familiar three‑screen horizon, fighting schools of fish‑shaped foes and choosing branches that lead to entirely different zones. What really sets this version apart is the inclusion of every one of the 26 bosses sketched for the original project, many of which never saw the light of day until they were repurposed for Darius II.
A stripped‑down counterpart, Darius Plus, arrived for the standard PC Engine later that year, and those who owned both releases unlocked the hidden Darius Alpha mode. In 2020 the title resurfaced on the CoreGrafx Mini, bringing the faithful port to a new generation worldwide.
Storyline
In Super Darius, humanity’s desperate search for a new home after Earth’s pollution leads to the colonization of a distant world called Darius. The settlers build a thriving society, but peace shatters when the malevolent Belser Army—maritime‑shaped alien warships—launch a brutal invasion. Their overwhelming firepower wipes out the planet’s defense fleet, leaving the colonists to face relentless satellite bombardments. Hope arrives in the form of the Silver Hawk fighters, sleek single‑pilot ships capable of wielding multiple weapons at once. Top pilots Proco and Tiat take the helm, becoming the last line of resistance as they battle the Belser forces to protect Darius from total annihilation.
