Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force
1994 Beat 'em Up
Loom on the TurboGrafx‑CD feels like stepping into a living tapestry. The game keeps its signature point‑and‑click magic, letting you guide Bobbin Threadbare with a simple cursor while he weaves four‑note spells on his distaff—no clunky typing or inventory juggling to slow you down. The visuals are a curious blend: the richer 256‑color artwork is merged with the more modest 16‑color assets, then remapped to the console’s palette, giving the world a slightly muted but still striking look that holds up surprisingly well.
What really sets this version apart is how the interface turns every puzzle into a musical experiment. You watch an object, learn its draft, then replay the notes to open doors, reveal hidden paths, or even reverse effects by playing the tune backwards. The soundtrack, built around Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and other classical pieces, swells behind each spell, making each successful draft feel like a tiny concert.
Even after decades, the TurboGrafx‑CD edition remains an elegant, accessible adventure. Its high‑resolution landscapes and smooth animation draw you in, while the lack of lethal threats lets you explore at your own pace, making Loom a timeless, almost meditative experience for both newcomers and veteran gamers.
Loom takes place in the far‑future year 8021, an era known as the Age of the Great Guilds where societies such as Blacksmiths, Shepherds and Clerics vie for absolute control of secret knowledge. The humble Guild of Weavers has transcended ordinary cloth, weaving subtle patterns into reality itself, until they are persecuted as witches and retreat to an island called Loom. Lady Cygna Threadbare defies the three Elders—Atropos, Clothos and Lachesis—by using the Loom to create a gray thread, unintentionally pulling an infant, Bobbin, into the world; she is transformed into a swan and the child is raised by the servant Hetchel.
On his seventeenth birthday Bobbin is summoned to the Sanctuary, where the Elders punish Hetchel with a Transcendence draft that turns her into a swan’s egg. A mysterious swan crashes through the window, reverses the draft on the Elders and the villagers, turning every Weaver except Bobbin into swans that flee through a sky‑rift. Bobbin retrieves Atropos’ distaff, frees Hetchel—now a cygnet—and learns that a looming Third Shadow threatens the world.
Bobbin’s journey leads him across guild territories, confronting Bishop Mandible, who seeks the Weaver’s distaff to command an undead army. Mandible’s misuse of a draft tears the fabric of the universe, releasing Chaos, which kills the Bishop and spreads undead devastation. By reclaiming the distaff and healing the pattern’s tears, Bobbin ultimately defeats Chaos, destroys the great Loom, and casts Transcendence on himself, soaring away with the swan flock as the world splits between Chaos and the surviving Weavers.
