Summary

Hellfire S brings the classic 1989 horizontal shooter to the TurboGrafx‑CD with a handful of upgrades that feel surprisingly fresh. The most noticeable change is the swap of the original male lead for Kaoru, a determined female pilot whose voice work was provided by Yumi Tōma, giving the game a new personality without altering its core premise. Musically, the title replaces the chiptune score with a richer, orchestral remix that plays over animated cut‑scenes, adding a cinematic flair to each of the six increasingly demanding stages. Gameplay stays true to its roots: you pilot the CNCS1 ship, juggling four upgradeable weapons, a bomb‑type main gun, a shield, and a satellite "option" while collecting speed boosts and point items. After the final stage the game loops with heightened difficulty, and a checkpoint‑style respawn system keeps the action relentless for anyone chasing a perfect run.

Storyline

Hellfire S – The Another Story takes place in the year 2998, when humanity has spread across the galaxy and established a peaceful interstellar society. A mysterious space phenomenon called the Black Nebula, created by the robot dictator Super Mech, begins devouring stars and threatens the newest human colonies. In response, a member of the Space Federation—identified as Kaoru in the PC Engine CD‑ROM² ending and as Captain Lancer in other sources—pilots the lone CNCS1 fighter equipped with the Hellfire weapon, the galaxy’s most powerful armament, to launch a surprise strike against Super Mech’s armada. After a fierce battle, the Black Nebula is destroyed, and the protagonist returns to Earth. In the PC Engine CD‑ROM² conclusion, Kaoru sacrifices herself to protect the planet, ending the conflict with a tragic but heroic act.
