Summary
Sapphire (officially Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire) is a standout vertically scrolling shooter for the TurboGrafxâCD/PC Engine that combines animeâstyle flair with topâtier presentation. Hudson Soft partnered CAProduction with famed illustrator Mika Akitakaâknown for the Galaxy FrĂ€ulein Yuna seriesâto give the game a distinct âbishĆjo mechaâ aesthetic, and the soundtrack was handled by Tâs Music, the same team behind Lords of Thunder.
Players pilot one of four âBurning Rabbitâ women, each with a uniquely balanced ship offering different speeds, firepower and three weapon types that can be powered up by colored gems; the game also supports twoâplayer coâop and adjustable difficulty plus highâscore credit options. Released on the Arcade CDâROMÂČ format, the title required the NEC Arcade Card RAM expansion, which helped deliver preârendered 2âD sprites that mimic 3âD polygons, strong parallax scrolling and vivid lighting effects that still wow retro fans.
Because it launched in very limited numbers near the consoleâs endâofâlife, original copies command high collector prices, and a 2008 PSP compilation finally made the experience widely accessible.
Storyline
In 2092, time travel is routine and a new threat emerges. Terrorists hide weapons in earlier eras, prompting creation of an allâwomen police unit.
Players assume the role of one of those officers in Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (often just called Sapphire). Their ship darts through waves of foes and massive bosses as they pursue a particularly slippery adversary.
The chase spans five distinct stages: a neonâlit futuristic city, a medieval battlefield, the sands of ancient Egypt, feudal Japan, and finally the vacuum of outer space.
Each level mixes shootââemâup action with the storyâs timeâhopping premise, delivering a fastâpaced sciâfi adventure that ties the eras together.
