Summary

Dungeon Explorer II carries the fast‑paced, top‑down hack‑and‑slash feel of its predecessor, but the TurboCD hardware lets the sequel swell with a richer selection of stages and hidden zones that unlock as you advance. You pick from eight fantasy archetypes, each with its own magic style, and later promote them into upgraded classes to tweak stats and abilities. Up to five friends can dive in together, sharing a common pool of lives; when you run out the game ends, though you can win extra chances by gambling with a Grim Reaper‑styled mini‑game.
The CD also houses a soundtrack by Yoshio Tsuru of Compozilla, and the English version boasts full voice acting courtesy of Working Designs, adding an unusual polish for a 1993 TurboGrafx‑CD title. Critics praised its vibrant graphics, catchy audio, and the seamless couch‑co‑op, and its scarcity in the West now pushes copies past $100 on the retro market.

Storyline

Set a century after the original Dungeon Explorer, Dungeon Explorer II follows eight heroes who must retrieve the stolen Ora stone. The alien king Natas was defeated long ago, and the stone had kept Oddesia at peace. Evil magician Fades, a loyal follower of Natas, murders King Earl II, steals the Ora stone and attempts to resurrect the dark ruler. At the same time, Princess Miriam of Solis is captured by the monster Mynos the Man‑Bull while traveling through Ardeen. The party’s dual quest is to recover the stone, stop Fades’ revival plan, and rescue Miriam before Oddesia falls into ruin.
