Summary
Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Son Goku Densetsu feels like a love letter to the era when CD‑ROMs first let developers blend anime flair with arcade‑style combat. The game’s four‑tier battle plane, a nod to Fatal Fury’s depth‑charging system, lets you juggle blocking, projectile firing, and a charge‑up bar for those iconic Ki blasts. What really stands out is the seamless switch between fast‑paced fighting and interactive animation sequences that replay Goku’s seven pivotal battles, from his early Saiyan clashes to the climactic Cell Games showdown. The pixel art team—Muneshige Ikeshita, Toshihiro Uchibori, Yoshihiro Nakagawachi—delivered crisp, vibrant sprites that still hold up, while Koichi Shimamura’s CD‑quality soundtrack pumps energy into every match. Critics praised the title’s visual polish, fluid animations, and the way it leveraged the PC Engine’s CD format, though they noted a steep learning curve for newcomers and a language barrier for non‑Japanese players. Despite those hurdles, the game earned high scores across European magazines and sold around 40,000 copies in Japan, cementing its reputation as a hidden gem for retro fighting fans.
Storyline
Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Son Goku Densetsu (often just called Idainaru Son Goku Densetsu) retells the seven most iconic battles of Goku from the original series through to the end of the Cell Games saga. The game is framed as a series of cinematics in which Gohan recounts his father's exploits to his younger brother Goten, who never met Goku because he died before Goten was born. Players can pick any of the seven episodes and fight the corresponding opponent, ranging from the assassin Mercenary Tao to the perfect Cell. Each story is presented with animated cut‑scenes that set up the fight.
The roster includes Tao Pai Pai, the Tenkaichi Budōkai showdown with Tien Shinhan and Piccolo Jr., the defeat of King Piccolo, the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament clash with Piccolo, the defense of Earth against Vegeta, the rescue of Namek from Frieza, and Goku’s self‑sacrifice to stop Cell. The narrative is delivered by Gohan and other characters, giving the player a nostalgic recap of Goku’s legacy. By letting the player choose any episode, the game lets fans relive each pivotal moment at their own pace. It’s a concise tribute to Goku’s greatest battles on the TurboGrafx‑CD.
