Summary

Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams landed on the TurboGrafx‑CD in early 1993, bringing the arcade’s frantic witch‑on‑a‑broom action to home consoles with a Super CD‑ROM² disc. The port kept the bright, Parodius‑style graphics but swapped to a lower screen resolution and a tweaked colour palette, while the CD‑quality soundtrack gave the stages a hard‑rock, Valis‑like orchestral punch. Japanese players even got voice work from Tarako, though the English cutscenes were famously garbled, a point that DuoWorld called out as a translation misstep.

Critics were largely enthusiastic: French magazine Consoles + lauded the faithful visuals and replay value, Electric Brain praised its difficulty and colorful presentation, and GameFan listed it among the TurboGrafx‑CD’s best shooters for its fast action and originality. Even Computer and Video Games joined the chorus, commending the game’s visuals, sound and overall gameplay, cementing Cotton’s cult status among retro shooter fans.

Storyline

In the world of Filament, an evil mist has plunged everything into an endless night, threatening the land and its inhabitants. Cotton, a young witch who is obsessed with Willow candy, is approached by a fairy named Silk, who begs her to defeat the monsters spreading the darkness. Cotton initially refuses, but when Silk mentions the coveted candy, she agrees to any task to get it. Riding her magical broom, Cotton blasts through wave after wave of enemies, turning the shooter‑style adventure into a candy‑driven quest. Though she’s motivated by her sweet tooth, her journey ends up saving the world from the looming darkness.
