Summary
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood dazzles with its nine meticulously crafted stages, each branching into hidden routes that reward the keenest explorers. You wield Richter Belmont’s iconic whip alongside a choice of six classic sub‑weapons—axe, dagger, bible, cross, holy water, and pocket watch—and can unleash the dramatic Item Crash super‑attack when the moment calls for extra power.
Rescuing the four captive maidens, especially the feisty Maria Renard, dramatically shifts the game’s flow: Maria becomes a second playable character, flaunting double‑jump, doubled damage, her unique “Guardian Knuckle” strike, and a whimsical set of sub‑weapons ranging from kitten to phoenix. Her attacks are delivered by swarming doves, adding a fresh visual flair.
Behind the scenes, Konami’s Toru Hagihara directed a soundtrack that blends Red‑Book CD audio with the system’s sound chip, delivering an atmospheric score by Keizo Nakamura and colleagues that still stands out on the TurboGrafx‑CD. Hidden content like the “Peke” minigame teases dedicated fans, while the game’s multiple endings give lasting replay value long after the castle’s gates close.
Storyline
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood unfolds in the year 1792, when the immortal Count Dracula has risen again, wielding powers to shift into bat, wolf, or mist and feeding on the blood of young maidens. The resurrected lord of evil seeks to shatter the peace of the world, a darkness that has been whispered about for a century. Richter Belmont, a 19‑year‑old heir to the legendary Vampire Killer whip and direct descendant of Simon Belmont, rides to Dracula’s castle after his beloved Annette is seized by the vampire’s servant Shaft. Determined to end the nightmare, he plunges into the fortress, confronting horrors such as the Spirit of Death, a headless knight, and a minotaur.
Along the way he frees several captives—Maria Renard, his distant relative; Terra, a nun; and Iris, the doctor’s daughter—each rescued from the clutches of Dracula’s minions. After slaying Shaft, Richter confronts Dracula himself, exposing the vampire to the cleansing light of day. The sunlight forces Dracula to vanish as the castle crumbles into the sea. Richter escapes on horseback, leaving the darkness behind.
