Summary
Avenger is a fast‑paced vertical shooter that thrusts you into a plane darting through skies riddled with enemy fighters, ground tanks, artillery cannons, naval ships and massive boss rigs. Each mission starts with a strategic pick‑menu that lets you outfit the aircraft with three weapon layers – a main arm, a sub system and a special attack – and the three fire together as you glide forward.
What sets the game apart is the freedom to mix and match: I can pair a rocket‑launcher main gun with a side‑laser pod as a sub weapon and layer a protective shield as a special, while unlimited ammo feeds the first two and the shield is triggered by its own button. The specials are powerful but scarce, forcing careful timing.
Power‑ups rush across the screen at breakneck speed and must be captured at just the right moment, boosting the firepower of whichever slot you choose without altering the core weapon itself.
Storyline
The TurboGrafx‑CD shooter Avenger drops you into a post‑apocalyptic world where a devastating atomic war has razed the major cities and decimated most of the population. In the chaos, rival military factions clash for control, and one ruthless organization ultimately imposes a tyrannical regime, wielding advanced technology to enforce its rule. The planet teeters on the brink of total subjugation.
You take the cockpit of the lone pilot who remains unaligned, tasked with piercing the enemy’s defenses and igniting a resistance. Armed with cutting‑edge weapons and a resolve to reclaim humanity’s future, the pilot battles through heavily fortified zones, seeking to dismantle the oppressive government. Only by breaking their technological stranglehold can the scattered survivors hope for a new dawn.
