Summary
Akumajou Dracula X - Chi no Rondo, often called Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, shines on the TurboGrafx‑CD thanks to its Red Book audio and the CD‑based sound chip, delivering a soundtrack that still feels epic. The game’s platform‑adventure design lets you swing Richter Belmont’s whip through nine sprawling stages, swapping between a classic whip and a roster of six sub‑weapons ranging from axes to holy water.
When you rescue the maiden Maria Renard, she becomes a second playable character with a double‑jump, higher damage output, and a quirky set of sub‑weapons inspired by Chinese mythological symbols. Maria’s “Guardian Knuckle” special summons a ghostly projection that smashes enemies, adding a fresh tactical layer to the familiar beat‑’em‑up rhythm.
Rondo of Blood mixes linear stage runs with branching routes, meaning the path you choose can alter the enemies, environment, and boss you face later. The Item Crash mechanic lets you unleash a super‑charged sub‑weapon attack, and a hidden minigame appears if the system lacks the required Super System Card.
Since its 1993 Japan‑only debut, the title has resurfaced on the TurboGrafx‑16 Mini, Wii Virtual Console, and the Castlevania Requiem collection for PS4, and a Limited Run Games English TurboDuo edition is slated for release, keeping the CD‑era classic alive for new fans.
Storyline
Set in 1792, Akumajou Dracula X – Chi no Rondo (commonly called Rondo of Blood) follows the age‑old clash between the Belmont vampire hunters and the resurrected Dracula. Nineteen‑year‑old Richter Belmont, heir to the legendary Vampire Killer whip and direct descendant of Simon, storms Dracula’s castle after his beloved Annette is snatched by the vampire’s servant Shaft as a trap.
Richter battles a host of nightmarish foes—including the spirit of Death, a headless knight and a minotaur—while rescuing several women held captive: his young relative Maria Renard, the nun Terra, the doctor’s daughter Iris, and finally Annette. After defeating Shaft, he confronts Dracula, shatters the vampire with sunlight, and watches the castle crumble into the sea as he rides away on horseback.
