Summary
Wonder Momo turns the arcade beat‑'em‑up formula into a tongue‑in‑cheek stage show. You play an actress performing in the fictional "Namco Theater," where the audience’s cheers and flash‑bulbs become part of the action. Basic attacks are simple kicks, but each successful hit fills a hidden "Wonder" meter that, when unleashed, lets you morph into the titular heroine.
In her Wonder form Momo wields the iconic Wonder Hoop, fires tiny energy bursts while crouching, and can summon the Wonder Typhoon—a radial blast that sweeps enemies off their feet. The game even sprinkles in playful fan‑service: a glimpse of her underwear when she jumps and photographers in the crowd that can temporarily stun her.
The TurboGrafx‑16 (PC Engine) version, released in 1989, keeps the arcade’s 8‑way joystick feel, adds a high‑jump by holding up, and uses a swirling tornado as the trigger for the Wonder transformation, preserving the show‑like atmosphere on a home console.
Storyline
Wonder Momo opens with a tongue‑in‑cheek parody of the classic MGM lion logo, this time starring the titular Momo. The scene then shifts to a theater where a live stage show is about to begin, and the player assumes the role of the actress who portrays Wonder Momo on the Namco Theater stage, fighting off a parade of bizarre enemies during the performance.
In the later ShiftyLook comic “Wonder Momo: Battle Idol,” the story jumps 25 years forward. An aspiring idol named Momoko fails a TV audition, encounters a race of aliens who bestow the original Wonder Momo’s powers, and must master them while contending with a rival hero, Amazona – actually the popular idol Akiho Mazo, who is later revealed to be Momoko’s mother. The 2014 anime miniseries follows this same premise, showing Momoko’s transformation and her battles against the alien threat.
According to TheGamesDB, Momo is described as a heroine from space who battles the evil Phantom Warudemon Army (Kaijin Gundan Warudemon).
