Summary
Volfied on the TurboGrafx‑16 keeps the classic Qix formula but swaps the abstract marker for a sleek little ship called Monotros, giving the whole affair a futuristic vibe. Each stage is a neon‑lit arena where a single big alien roams the field while swarms of smaller foes dart about, and the moment I seal off a region the side containing the big enemy becomes the "outside"—any tiny enemies trapped inside disappear for extra points. The game pushes the 80%‑coverage requirement higher than its predecessor, rewarding me with bonuses the farther I exceed that threshold. Grey power‑up pods litter the map; capture one and a letter flashes, instantly granting speed boosts or a weapon that can finally take down the main menace. Every level rolls out a fresh background and enemy design, so the visual shift feels like moving to a new planet rather than just another round of the same puzzle.
Storyline
Volfied, the TurboGrafx‑16 shooter, follows a lone space pilot who returns to his home planet Volfied only to find it besieged by an unknown alien force. The surviving inhabitants have retreated to underground shelters and manage to send a distress signal to the pilot. Answering the call, he pilots his ship, relying on its defensive weapons to carve a path through the alien invaders. His mission is to eradicate the threat and rescue the hidden population. The game’s narrative is simple but drives the fast‑paced, area‑clearing action.
