Summary
Splatterhouse on the TurboGrafx‑16 keeps the classic side‑scrolling beat ’em up feel while sprinkling in a few odd quirks that set it apart from its arcade sibling. You move Rick, a college student resurrected by the sentient Terror Mask, through the cramped corridors of West Mansion, punching, kicking, and unleashing a trademark drop‑kick that skids across the floor, dispatching anything in its path. Hidden ladders and floor holes let you peek at alternative routes, giving each mid‑stage a whisper of non‑linear freedom.
The cartridge’s box even sports a faux parental‑advisory warning, underscoring the game’s gory reputation. For the TG‑16 release Namco swapped the arcade’s gruesome opening animation for a static exterior shot and made the Terror Mask flash red with black accents. Several weapons were toned down—meat cleavers became a simple wooden board, while a final boss’s axe turned into a shiny gold cleaver. Graphic moments like a hand flashing a middle finger or a fluid‑splattering womb death were censored, replaced by a generic explosion. Boss arenas were also altered, removing cathedral arches and swapping an inverted‑cross adversary for a severed head, keeping the horror vibe alive without crossing every boundary.
Storyline
Rick Taylor and his classmate Jennifer Willis take shelter from a storm in West Mansion, the local landmark dubbed Splatterhouse for rumors of Dr. West’s hideous experiments. The door slams shut and Jennifer screams.
Rick awakens in a dungeon, revived by the sentient Mayan Terror Mask that fuses to his face and grants monstrous strength. He begins a brutal rampage, slaying hordes of twisted monsters.
He finds Jennifer on a couch, surrounded by fleeing creatures. She mutates into a fanged beast that attacks while begging for help, forcing Rick to kill her; she briefly returns to normal, thanks him, and dies.
Rage drives Rick to a blood‑stained hole in the floor, where he learns the mansion itself is alive. A crimson hallway leads to the house’s “womb,” spawning fetus‑like foes; destroying it ignites the building in flames.
Escaping the blaze, Rick reaches a grave where the mask revives a giant monster called Hell Chaos. After destroying it, a ghost fades, the mask shatters, Rick reverts to human form, and the credits end—only for the mask to reassemble, laugh, and show END.
