Summary
Shockman landed on the TurboGrafx‑16 in 1991, becoming the only title from the Cyber Citizen Shockman series to see a contemporary Western release before the whole line was revived by Ratalaika Games. Developed by Winds, the game drops the sword‑swinging mechanics of its predecessor and swaps them for a Mega Buster‑style ranged gun, reshaping the core combat feel.
The playfield mixes eight varied stages, alternating between classic side‑view action sequences where you jump and unleash special techniques, and dedicated side‑scrolling shooting segments that test reflexes. Two‑player mode adds a cooperative twist: partners share a single life pool and can trigger a powerful Team Shockbeam for extra firepower. The revised jump physics and the removal of the world‑map, upgrades, and hostage rescues give Shockman a tighter, more arcade‑centric experience that still echoes its roots.
Storyline
Shockman (often referred to as *A New Menace*) picks up roughly two years after the original Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman. Arnold, now called Tasuke in the Japanese version, has left school and works as a cook in a local restaurant, while Sonya (Kyapiko) continues her studies.
Doc, ever‑watchful after the fall of the Dark Skull, has been sending the pair on fruitless searches for a new invasion. His concerns become urgent when he is kidnapped, revealing an alien empire led by Ryo that intends to seize the world. Adding to the danger are two dark Shockmen, Jeeta and Mue, who wield powers similar to Arnold and Sonya.
The duo must rescue Doc, thwart Ryo’s conquest, and survive the assaults of Jeeta and Mue before the planet falls into chaos.
