Summary

Sengoku Mahjong (戦国麻雀) is a Riichi‑style mahjong game that drapes the classic tile‑matching mechanics in the flamboyant world of Japan’s warring states. It debuted as the first mahjong title on the PC Engine and later resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console and PlayStation Network, keeping the retro vibe alive for modern platforms. The game offers two distinct ways to play: a single‑match mode where you face off against a cast of twelve historical figures, and a Conquest (or 合戦) mode that tasks you with unifying the country by winning successive four‑player rounds against AI opponents, all in one sitting since there’s no password save. Each warlord—Mōri Terumoto, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Uesugi Kenshin, Date Masamune, Nene, Oda Nobunaga, Yodo‑kun, Takeda Shingen, Shimazu Yoshihisa, Ittō’s wife, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Hōjō Ujiyasu—carries a unique play style, from aggressive to defensive. Critics gave it modest scores (28/40 in Famitsu’s cross‑review and 21.16/30 in PC Engine FAN’s reader poll), placing it around the middle of the PC Engine library in the early ’90s.
