Summary

Samurai‑Ghost drops you back into the cursed world of the Darkside, where the resurrected samurai Kagekiyo wields both his blade and a set of spirit weapons to slice through demonic swarms. The game builds on the hack‑and‑slash formula of its predecessor, letting you levitate, fire energy projectiles, and collect candles that restore health as you crawl through seven tightly designed zones.

Each area throws a mix of 12th‑century samurai and nightmarish demons at you, ending with a distinct boss that guards the Heart of the Darkside. The combat feels deliberate, demanding timing for one‑on‑one duels while the power‑up system rewards you for chaining spirit attacks. Even though the narrative echoes the Genpei Tōma Den saga, the visual and audio cues stay true to the TurboGrafx‑16’s retro charm.

Critical response was mixed; European reviewers gave it around half of the possible points, while some Japanese magazines scored it in the 70s out of 100. Modern retrospectives still note the quirky blend of historical swordsmen and ghostly abilities, even if the difficulty spikes can feel unforgiving. For fans of classic platform fighters, Samurai‑Ghost remains a curious artifact of early ’90s arcade‑style design.

Storyline

In Samurai‑Ghost (often just called Samurai Ghost) the player assumes the role of the resurrected samurai Taira no Kagekiyo. Kagekiyo roams feudal Japan, clashing with the legendary forces of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his loyal companion Saitō Musashibō Benkei. The battle intensifies when he finally confronts his arch‑enemy, Minamoto no Yoritomo, in a showdown that tests both skill and resolve. Along the way, Kagekiyo also meets Minamoto no Yoshinaka, known as Kiso no Yoshinaka; after being defeated, Yoshinaka commits seppuku, ending his tragic arc. The storyline weaves these historic figures into a fast‑paced action platformer that captures the mythic atmosphere of the era.
