Summary
Raiden on the TurboGrafx‑16 feels like a love letter to the classic arcade shooter, and the HuCard conversion manages to keep the original’s frantic vertical scrolling intact. The eight stages still demand tight dodging and strategic use of bombs, power‑ups, and the occasional medal, while the two‑player mode adds a quirky twist: firing at your partner creates a special projectile that can shred enemies.
What really stands out is how the port squeezes the arcade’s intense pacing onto modest hardware without sacrificing the crisp sprite work or the pulse‑pounding soundtrack. Hudson Soft’s later Super Raiden CD version even upgrades the music with Redbook audio and tacks on exclusive stages, proving the game’s core design can thrive across formats.
Critics gave the TurboGrafx‑16 version a middling aggregate score, but fans appreciated its faithful recreation and the cooperative fire‑power that made arcade nights memorable. In North America the arcade original was a coin‑drop champion, and that momentum carried over to the home console, where the game still feels like a solid, adrenaline‑filled blast from the past.
Storyline
In the year 2090 Earth faces an invasion by an alien species called the Crystals. The Crystals have seized control of most of the planet’s military hardware, using it to scorch the surface with overwhelming firepower. In response, the global defense group Vanquish Crystal Defense (VCD) creates a new weapon: the Fighting Thunder, a supersonic fighter built from captured Crystal technology.
Players pilot the twin‑pilot Fighting Thunder aircraft as the VCD’s last hope to push back the invaders. The craft’s advanced systems give humanity a fighting chance against the alien onslaught. This is the premise of the TurboGrafx‑16 shooter Raiden.
