Summary

R-Type on the TurboGrafx‑16 is Hudson Soft’s faithful translation of Irem’s iconic 1987 side‑scrolling shooter, bundling the two original PC Engine HuCards into a single North‑American cartridge. While the arcade’s crisp 16‑bit graphics survive, the console’s lower resolution and tighter colour palette introduce occasional sprite flicker, slowdown, and a subtle vertical scroll when the ship approaches the screen edges.

The version is widely praised as the most accurate home conversion for the system and adds a unique boss at the end of Stage 6, a departure from the endless enemy waves of other ports. Players still pilot the R‑9 “Arrowhead” and its detachable “Force” orb, preserving the intense, hit‑or‑miss gameplay that made the arcade a hit despite its steep difficulty. Thanks to its faithful design and memorable music, this TurboGrafx‑16 R‑Type is often singled out as the console’s defining shoot‑em‑up and earned later re‑releases on Nintendo’s Virtual Console.

Storyline

In the TurboGrafx‑16 version of R‑Type, you take the helm of the R‑9 “Arrowhead” starship. The sleek vessel is armed with a forward‑firing laser and a detachable “Force” pod that can shield you or attack enemies. Your objective is straightforward: hunt down and annihilate the Bydo, a ruthless alien race determined to eradicate humanity. Each level throws increasingly bizarre bio‑mechanical foes, forcing you to master precise shooting and strategic use of the Force. Success means the galaxy is saved from total extinction.
