Summary

Ninja Ryūkenden, the TurboGrafx‑16 version of the classic ninja saga, feels like a living comic book you can actually run through. The game’s side‑scrolling is razor‑tight, and each stage is punctuated by cinematic cutscenes that play out like a low‑budget action movie, keeping the pacing brisk and the tension high.

What really sets it apart is the toolbox of ninja tricks. Ryu Hayabusa can cling to walls, launch a wind‑mill shuriken that boomerangs back, and unleash flashy Ninja Arts that drain collected power‑ups for a burst of magic. Those power‑ups aren’t just for show; they let you trigger special attacks that feel rewarding in the heat of battle.

Hudson Soft’s TurboGrafx‑16 port adds a visual polish that makes the sprites pop, while the music gets a fresh, synth‑driven makeover. The difficulty curve was also tweaked, smoothing out some of the original’s brutal spikes without sacrificing the challenge that fans love.

Scattered throughout the stages are secret swords and hidden items that reward exploration, turning each level into a puzzle‑like hunt. It’s a perfect blend of platforming, action, and movie‑style storytelling that still feels fresh for anyone who loves a good retro ninja romp.

Storyline

In Ninja Ryuuken Den, also known casually as Ninja Ryu, the legendary ninja Ryu Hayabusa receives a desperate letter from his missing father, Ken. The note urges Ryu to travel to America and seek out archaeologist Dr. Smith, who reveals that two ancient statues hidden by Ken possess the power to end the world if they are ever united. Determined to stop the catastrophe, Ryu follows the trail southward into the jungles of South America. There he confronts the evil cult leader Jaquio, who plans to revive the demon Jashin and exploit the statues for his apocalyptic scheme. The game’s setting is steeped in conspiracy, mystery, and looming evil as Ninja Ryu embarks on his fateful journey.
