Summary
Neutopia II feels like a love letter to the early Legend of Zelda games, packing a sizable 2D world that rewards free‑range exploration as well as occasional linear passages. Though its predecessor set the stage, this sequel was built by a mostly new Hudson Soft team led by director/designer Shigeki Fujiwara, with original staff Kōji Kaneta and Masato Tobisawa returning as co‑programmers and Fumie Takaoka crafting the character artwork. Keita Hoshi supplied a memorable soundtrack and sound‑effects, adding an energetic pulse that still holds up today. Upon its North American launch, the title was highlighted as a core offering in Turbo Technologies’ 1992 relaunch alongside Air Zonk and Jackie Chan’s Action Kung‑Fu, and it later resurfaced on the Wii’s Virtual Console, PlayStation Network, Wii U, and even the PC Engine Mini console. Critics praised its varied monsters, fresh gameplay tweaks, and solid audiovisual presentation, though some lamented its derivative feel; the promised Neutopia III never materialized, but a dedicated homebrew community kept the idea alive through unofficial projects.
Storyline
In Neutopia II the player assumes the role of Jazeta’s son, embarking on a quest to rescue his captured father and put an end to the resurgence of the evil demon Dirth.
