Summary
The TurboGrafx‑16 version of Narazumono Sentai Butai – Bloody Wolf takes the arcade’s frantic run‑and‑gun action and stretches it into a single‑player experience that feels surprisingly deep. You pick either Snake or Eagle and charge through eight side‑scrolling stages, each larger than its arcade counterpart and backed by a richer soundtrack that really brings the 80s vibe to life.
What makes this port stand out is the arsenal expansion: beyond the unlimited‑ammo machine gun and trusty knife, you can stumble upon shotguns, bazookas, flash‑bombs and grenades, plus occasional health and defensive power‑ups. A hidden motorcycle appears in a few sections, letting you zip across the screen, while other parts let you swim, adding a splash of variety to the otherwise land‑locked chaos.
The game also sprinkles in quirky details like the renamed "Lucky Rabbit’s Foot" item and expanded hostage dialogue during the mission brief, giving the solo run a bit more personality. All told, Bloody Wolf on the TurboGrafx‑16 feels like a love letter to Contra‑style shooters, with enough fresh twists to keep a retro‑gaming fan like me coming back for another round.
Storyline
Narazumono Sentai Butai – Bloody Wolf (often just called Bloody Wolf) puts you in the boots of Snake and Eagle, two elite commandos of the titular special forces. Their commander—depicted as a Secretary of State in the Battle Rangers version—orders them to smash the enemy’s heavily‑armed weapon base while rescuing any missing allies and, most importantly, the President. The game’s briefing stresses that the President and your fellow soldiers are counting on you to succeed. After the base is destroyed, the Colonel contacts the duo again, insisting they must rescue the President once more. However, Snake and Eagle decide to “party it up tonight,” decline the follow‑up mission, and abandon the Colonel, leaving the crisis unresolved.
