Summary

Military Madness, known in Japan as Nectaris, drops you onto the Moon in 2089 where the Axis‑Xenon Empire has seized the lunar factories and is racing to fire the dreaded Supreme Atomic Missile at Earth. As the commander of the Allied‑Union, you must rally the remaining forces, capture key factories, and either free the prisoners in the enemy camp or wipe out every hostile unit before the doomsday weapon can be launched.

The game plays out on a hex‑grid where each unit’s mobility and fire range vary, and terrain can tip the balance of a clash. Units gain experience, can be repaired in captured factories, and can be ferried across the map by transport units. A distinctive "Zone of Control" lets you encircle foes, sapping their attack and defense while still permitting a single escape move.

Beyond the main campaign, Military Madness offers a tutorial mode called "Manual" and a two‑player versus option, with a password system to save progress. After the first set of sixteen maps, the challenge ramps up with an advanced set, and the title even resurfaced on the TurboGrafx‑16 Mini in 2020, keeping its strategic charm alive for new fans.

Storyline

In Military Madness (also known as Nectaris) the player commands Allied forces in a future lunar war after humanity colonizes the Moon and space on Earth becomes limited. The Axis Powers have seized most of the lunar surface, turning it into a contested battlefield. The game uses a top‑down 2D map for unit movement, and each encounter switches to a close‑up view of the skirmish. Set in 2089, the Axis‑Xenon Empire controls lunar factories and prepares the doomsday weapon S.A.M. (Supreme Atomic Missile) to strike Earth. Allied‑Union troops escape prison camps and race toward the launch base to thwart the weapon.
