Summary

Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (known in Japan as Mashin Hero Wataru) is a quirky two‑layer platformer that splits each stage into a bright overworld and a darker underworld. In the surface sections you guide human‑form Keith with a simple dagger, hopping across platforms, ducking falling cats and birds, and slipping into shops where you can spend collected coins on bolt bombs, health refills, and upgrades.

When you reach the end of an overworld segment, a rainbow portal whisks you to the underworld, where Keith dons the Nova Suit. The suit not only adds extra heart containers and a sharper sword, but also unlocks the bolt‑bombs that fire in eight directions, turning combat into a frantic, multi‑directional shoot‑out against nightmare‑like creatures. The underworld maps are larger and demand both horizontal and vertical navigation, culminating in a boss fight at each level’s conclusion.

The game’s charm lies in this constant shift of tone: the cheerful, shop‑filled surface world feels like a classic side‑scroller, while the underworld plunges you into a more atmospheric, challenge‑driven arena. The dual‑mode design keeps the pacing fresh, rewarding players who balance exploration, resource management, and fast‑paced combat.

Storyline

Majin Eiyuu Den Wataru (often just called Wataru) puts you in the shoes of Keith Courage, a member of the Nations of International Citizens for Earth (N.I.C.E.). Earth has been struck by a massive meteor that delivers an invasion force from the planet B.A.D. (Beastly Alien Dudes), which burrows deep beneath the surface to seize the planet.

Armed with a sword, Keith first battles outpost guards before descending into the Underworld, where he activates the Nova Suit—a secret legacy from his fallen father that makes him half‑man, half‑mechanical monster. His lightning‑cracked blade and near‑invincibility let him wreak havoc as he pushes toward the Robo Zone, the seventh Alpha Zone and B.A.D.’s headquarters.

Four friends provide advice, extra swords, bombs, and extra lives, while Keith must also gather the stolen riches left by the invaders. Collecting enough money lets him buy his way out of trouble and ultimately recapture Earth, restoring humanity’s place in the universe.
