Summary
The Legendary Axe burst onto the TurboGrafx‑16 as a launch title, instantly proving the system could out‑shine the NES with its vivid sprites and fluid animation. What sets the game apart is the on‑screen strength meter that empties with each swing of Gogan’s axe and slowly refills, forcing players to choose between rapid, weak chops or waiting for a single, crushing blow. Collecting crystal containers boosts the meter by 25 % and wing icons speed up attack recovery, while broken Jagu idols drop gems, health orbs and extra lives, adding a layer of strategic scavenging to the side‑scrolling action. The six zones—jungle, cavern, mountain plateau and more—each culminate in a memorable boss, and the fifth level’s “Pits of Madness” maze forces you to backtrack if you take a wrong turn, keeping the challenge fresh until the final showdown with Jagu. Critics at the time hailed the title as a showcase of the TurboGrafx‑16’s capabilities, awarding it Game of the Year honors and praising its blend of tight controls, diverse music and impressive boss design. Decades later, retro publications still cite The Legendary Axe as a benchmark for classic platformers, noting its simple yet deep combat system and its role in making the TurboGrafx‑16 an easy sell for early adopters.
Storyline
The Legendary Axe takes place in a remote land ruled by the cult of Jagu, a half‑man, half‑beast leader who regularly pillages the countryside. The cult forces the nearby village of Minofu to offer a human sacrifice each year. This season’s victim is a young woman named Flare.
Gogan, a native of Minofu, has been studying warfare in a distant village when he learns that Flare has been taken. He rushes home only to find her already captured and bound for the “Evil Place” high in the mountains. Determined to stop the ritual, the village elders entrust him with the legendary axe called “Sting”.
Armed with Sting, Gogan battles through the six zones of Jagu’s territory, confronting the cult’s minions and finally confronting Jagu himself. His goal is to defeat the evil cult and rescue Flare.
