Summary
The PC‑Engine’s KiKi KaiKai arrived in early 1990, bringing Taito’s arcade‑born shrine‑maiden shooter to the TurboGrafx‑16 library. Its overhead, multi‑directional play lets Sayo‑chan fling o‑fuda scrolls or swing a gohei wand, and power‑ups appear as paper slips that boost range or strength. Composer Hisayoshi Ogura supplied a soundtrack that blends shamisen, woodwinds and a pulsing electronic beat, all rendered in mono chiptune.
Beyond the gameplay, the title stands out for swapping the usual sci‑fi veneer of 1980s shooters for a feudal‑Japan mythic vibe, which Taito billed as a “lovely action game” with an exotic Asian atmosphere. In its home market it was a hit: Game Machine ranked it the second‑best table arcade unit in November 1986 and it finished the year among the top ten earners. Its success seeded a long‑running series that western fans later met under the name Pocky & Rocky.
Storyline
KiKi KaiKai follows the adventures of Sayo-chan, a young Shinto shrine maiden living in feudal Japan. One night, while she is fanning a ceremonial fire, the Seven Lucky Gods appear and warn her of an impending danger. Suddenly, a band of mischievous youkai swoops in, kidnaps the gods, and retreats to a distant mountain range. Determined to rescue the deities, Sayo-chan sets out across the countryside, battling a variety of strange creatures from Japanese mythology. Along the way she confronts obake, yurei, and other youkai, each encounter bringing her closer to the mountain where the gods are held captive.
