Summary

Playing as Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu feels like a fast‑paced martial‑arts platformer spread across five distinct stages, each capped by a boss showdown. The core loop is simple: punch, kick, and jump your way through hordes of enemies while keeping an eye on the occasional frog that hops across the screen. Hitting a frog drops either a power‑up or a rice bowl that restores health, but you can only carry one power‑up at a time, forcing you to choose your upgrades wisely.

Jackie can also charge a beam‑like attack that can be fired up to five times before it needs to be refilled. Defeated foes normally spill green orbs; collect thirty of them and you’ll replenish both your health and the beam’s charges, though enemies killed by the beam itself don’t leave any orbs behind. This creates a subtle risk‑reward balance between using the beam and farming orbs.

You start with a single life but can continue up to five times right out of the gate. Extra continues are earned in hidden bonus stages that appear when you ring a bell; these 30‑second challenges let you hop on clouds or smash statues for points, which can be spent on additional lives and special attacks. The game debuted on the TurboGrafx‑16 (PC‑Engine) in early 1991 and earned mixed but respectable Famitsu scores ranging from 6 to 8 out of 10.

Storyline

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu (often just called Action Kung Fu) puts the famed martial‑arts star on a frantic five‑stage quest to rescue his sister. Each of the five levels ends with a boss battle, and the journey takes him across a variety of enemy‑filled locales.

Jackie and his sister Josephine are portrayed as China’s supreme kung fu champions, tasked with defending the nation against the Prince of Sorcerers who lurks beyond the Great Wall. The sorcerer’s minions launch a demon horde, and in a twist the villain casts a spell that makes Josephine vanish into thin air.

Spurred on by his revered Master, Jackie must confront the dreaded sorcerer, battle the ghouls, and recover his sister—perhaps even learning a little magic himself to succeed.
