Summary
The TurboGrafx‑16 (PC Engine) version of Gradius brings the classic horizontal shooter to a 2‑Megabit HuCard with surprisingly few compromises compared to its NES and MSX cousins. While the lower resolution forces a modest amount of vertical scrolling, the core experience—piloting the Vic Viper through wave after wave of alien formations—remains intact.
The game’s hallmark power‑up system still relies on collecting capsules to advance a bottom‑screen meter, letting you cherry‑pick weapons, speed boosts, or the iconic Option satellites that mimic your shots. Those little satellite drones, refined after testing over twenty movement patterns, add a strategic layer that feels fresh even after decades of play. The Moai statues also make a return, a cheeky nod to the series’ early homage to Xevious’s mysterious stone heads.
A notable addition is the Desert Planet stage, a new desert‑themed arena that mirrors the Bone Planet level from the MSX version, giving TurboGrafx‑16 owners a unique slice of Gradius lore. Visually, the port captures the original’s distinct worlds, albeit with slightly tighter scrolling due to the console’s hardware limits.
Fans of the series will recognize the soundtrack’s legacy, too—original tracks that first appeared on Konami’s 1986 and 1987 limited‑edition albums have been preserved, and the music even earned a spotlight on the 2004 Konami Music Masterpiece Collection.
