Summary
Galaga '88 dazzles with a visual leap over its predecessors, offering richly detailed backgrounds, larger enemy sprites and a surprisingly crisp sense of depth for a 1980s fixed shooter. The game keeps the classic Blast Fighter at the helm, but adds a twist: let a Boss Galaga’s tractor beam snatch your ship, then rescue it to stack a second fighter, and rescue again—or grab a pink capsule—to field a triple‑ship powerhouse.
Each of the five worlds unfolds across up to four stages plus a bonus round, and two of the stages scroll vertically, culminating in a boss that tests the expanded firepower. Blue warp capsules drop from destroyed foes; collect two and finish the bonus stage to slip into an alternate dimension where enemy patterns grow even more aggressive, and the ending you see depends on which dimension you conquer.
The TurboGrafx‑16 conversion, released in the West as Galaga '90, earned a reputation as a "killer port" and later resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007 and the TurboGrafx‑16 Mini in 2020. Critics praised its colorful visuals, catchy soundtrack and the branching level paths, reflected in scores like AllGame’s 4/5, CVG’s 88%, Eurogamer’s 8/10 and Famitsu’s 33/40.
Storyline
In Galaga '88 for the TurboGrafx‑16, players pilot the starship Blast Fighter, launched to wipe out the hostile Galaga forces and raze their home planet. The mission sets the stage for the classic space‑shoot‑'em‑up action the series is known for.
