Summary

Final Lap Twin feels like a hidden gem on my TurboGrafx‑16 library. The game blends open‑world exploration with arcade‑style races, putting me in the shoes of a son eager to match his dad’s legendary racing reputation. I hop between cities on a map, chat with up‑and‑coming drivers, then throw down in tight courses to win cash for tweaking my car’s engine, suspension, and tires.

After outfitting the ride, I chase local champions across each town, eventually diving into a twisty maze that rewards me with the last performance parts. The final showdown pits me against the world’s best racer, delivering a surprisingly polished climax for a 1990 title. Critics seemed to agree—I saw a 7/10 from Electronic Gaming Monthly and an impressive 940/1000 score from ACE, which even named it one of the TurboGrafx‑16’s top two games.

Storyline

Final Lap Twin puts you in the seat of a young driver determined to match his father's racing legend. The game opens with the protagonist setting out across a sprawling map, hunting down small‑time racers in each town. Every win earns cash that can be spent on performance parts, from engines to tires. Upgrading the car is essential, because the competition only gets tougher as you progress.

After clearing a series of city circuits and beating the local champions, the route shifts into a labyrinthine maze. Hidden within the maze are the final upgrades that push the car to its ultimate potential. With the car fully tuned, the player faces the world racing champion in a high‑stakes showdown. Victory not only crowns the driver but also fulfills the legacy his father left behind.
