Summary

Final Blaster (sometimes just called Blaster) is a vertical‑scrolling shooter exclusive to the PC Engine that feels almost like a living system. You pilot the Blaster Mark II “Phoenix”, and the only shot that can pierce the biggest foes is a charge attack that morphs the ship into a fiery bird. I remember the thrill of finally unleashing the phoenix charge, and the game even watches how many power‑pods you’ve hoarded or how often you die, nudging the difficulty meter for the next stage accordingly.

Seven vividly colored stages – from metal bases to floating asteroids and organic structures – scroll at the speed you dictate by nudging the ship up or down. Bosses guard each zone, and familiar Namco icons like the invincible Bacura boards from Xevious appear as surprise obstacles. The soundtrack, later compiled with tunes from Märchen Maze and Blast Off, stands out for its energetic synth lines.

Critics praised the graphics and the charge‑fire mechanic, though they warned the adaptive difficulty could make later sections brutally tough. After its Japan‑only debut in 1990, the title resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 and earned a limited soundtrack release by Sweep Records in 2018, cementing its niche cult status.

Storyline

Final Blaster puts you behind the controls of the Blaster Mark II "Phoenix" starfighter. Your mission is simple but urgent: eradicate the Bosconian alien fleet before they can annihilate Earth and wipe out humanity. The game serves as the third and final chapter of Namco’s Bosconian saga, picking up after the 1989 arcade release Blast Off. Each level ramps up the alien threat, demanding precise shooting and quick reflexes.
