Summary

The TurboGrafx‑16 version of Die Hard feels like a hidden gem from the early ’90s, especially once you learn it started life as a completely unrelated overhead shooter. Pack‑In‑Video re‑skinned the original code with the Die Hard licence, swapping in John McClane’s iconic silhouette and a plot that mirrors the film’s hostage‑rescue premise. The result is a top‑down romp through Nakatomi Plaza where you dodge bullets, blast through corridors, and free trapped civilians while the clock ticks. Nihon Bussan’s publishing push gave the game a distinct Japanese flair, yet the core experience still captures the frantic, claustrophobic feel of the movie’s action. For anyone who enjoys retro shooters with a cinematic twist, this Die Hard title stands out as a clever mash‑up of licensed storytelling and arcade‑style design.

Storyline

In Die Hard on TurboGrafx-16, New York City policeman John McClane visits his estranged wife Holly and their two daughters on Christmas Eve and joins a holiday party at the Japanese‑owned Nakatomi Plaza. The celebration is abruptly halted when a group of terrorists seize the high‑rise and take everyone inside hostage. McClane quickly realizes that he is the only one who can attempt a rescue.

He battles his way through a jungle and a Vietnamese river, confronting generic soldiers, Vietnamese troops and security guards along the way. After surviving those environments, he reaches the basement of Nakatomi Plaza and begins climbing toward the roof.

At the top, McClane destroys an enemy attack helicopter and rescues Holly. Hans Gruber appears only in a cutscene; the game never pits McClane against him directly.
