Summary

Champion Wrestler is a surprisingly vibrant wrestling title that first lit up arcade cabinets in the late ’80s before finding a second life on the PC Engine. The game lets you step into the boots of a roster of eye‑catching characters – even borrowing Rastan, the hero of Taito’s own fantasy series – each packed with its own stat spread and a quirky special move. Some fighters swing weapons, others unleash a fire‑spit attack whose fury is governed by a handy power meter, adding a layer of strategy beyond the usual grapples. Up to two players can square off side‑by‑side, and the tag‑team option keeps the action fresh for friends who love a good showdown. Over the years the title has resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console, in the Taito Memories PS2 collection, and most recently in Hamster’s Arcade Archives for Switch and PS4, proving that its colorful chaos still draws a crowd.

Storyline

Champion Wrestler (often just called Champion Wrestler on the TurboGrafx‑16) pits you against a series of tough opponents who guard the coveted TWF championship belt. The game’s matches end when you either pin your rival or keep them out of the ring for a full 20 seconds. If you succeed, the victorious wrestler is shown living a luxurious lifestyle funded by the prize money. Conversely, the defeated competitor is humorously portrayed as impoverished or even decrepit, underscoring the high stakes of the competition.

Each bout tests your skill against formidable enemy techniques, making the quest for the championship belt a true test of timing and strategy.
