Summary

Playing the TurboGrafx‑16 version of Bloody Wolf (sometimes just called Bloody Wolf on the console) feels like stepping into a condensed Contra‑style arcade. You pick either Snake or Eagle, slap in a three‑letter codename, and immediately get a machine gun with infinite ammo plus a trusty knife for close‑range action. As you barrel through eight sprawling stages, you can swap the gun for shotguns, bazookas, flash bombs or grenades that drop from rescued hostages, and the game even drops health‑boosting and defensive power‑ups to keep the momentum rolling. A few levels let you hop on a motorcycle for a short burst of speed or splash into water, adding a tasty bit of variety. The PC Engine port expands the original stages, adds a brand‑new level, upgrades the soundtrack to full‑length tracks, and spruces up dialogue with extra lines from rescued civilians. One quirky rename is the former "Rosary" becoming the Lucky Rabbit’s Foot, a nod to lucky charms for players hungry for that extra edge.

Storyline

In Bloody Wolf, you control Snake and Eagle, two elite commandos of the eponymous special‑forces unit. Their commander orders them to smash an enemy weapons base, rescue any missing allies, and ultimately save the President.

The Japanese version, released as Battle Rangers, swaps the commander for a Secretary of State who simply tells the duo to “save the top urgent crisis of our nation.” The core objectives remain the same, but the briefing feels more political than military.

After the final showdown, the Colonel congratulates the pair and asks them to rescue the President again. Instead, Snake and Eagle shrug, decide to “party it up tonight,” and walk away, leaving the Colonel in the dust.
