Summary

Blazing Lazers, known as Gunhed in its Japanese home, was one of the launch titles for the TurboGrafx‑16 and quickly became a showcase for the system’s capabilities. The game drops you into a vertically scrolling shooter where you pilot the advanced Star Fighter through nine fast‑moving stages. Each stage pits you against a series of massive enemy super‑weapons, culminating in a boss showdown before you can move on. The title’s crisp, detailed backgrounds and tight sound design still hold up as a reminder of what the console could do.

What really sets the experience apart is the layered power‑up system. Four primary weapon types can be upgraded repeatedly via numbered icons and purple gel capsules, while secondary pickups grant shields, homing missiles, multibodies, or a “full fire” mode. You can toggle the ship’s speed across five settings, drop limited cluster bombs to clear swarms, and even use a flashing orb to wipe the screen and resume at the point of destruction. The game offers four continues and checkpoints that keep the action flowing without the dreaded slowdown of many contemporaries. All of this adds up to a relentless, yet strategically rich, shoot‑‘em‑up.

Critics praised Blazing Lazers for its intense pacing, lack of slowdown, and near‑perfect balance of firepower and challenge, earning scores like 96% from CVG and a perfect 5/5 from Dragon. It later earned a spot at #77 on EGM’s “100 Best Games of All Time” list and has been re‑released on the Wii Virtual Console, PlayStation Network, and Wii U, keeping it accessible to new generations. The game’s legacy lives on as a benchmark for TurboGrafx‑16 shooters and a favorite among retro enthusiasts. Its blend of visual flair and deep weapon customization makes it a timeless blast.

Storyline

In Blazing Lazers, a sprawling galaxy finds itself under siege by the hostile Dark Squadron, an enemy space armada bent on domination. The only beacon of hope is the cutting‑edge Gunhed Advanced Star Fighter, a lone warship tasked with turning the tide. Its mission is to hunt down and annihilate the Dark Squadron’s fleet while also targeting the massive Super Weapons that threaten to crush any resistance. The game’s narrative drives the player through relentless scrolling stages, each culminating in a showdown against these colossal threats. Victory means the galaxy’s survival, and only the pilot’s skill can secure it.
