Summary

Ankoku Densetsu, often called Dark Legend by fans, stands out on the TurboGrafx‑16 as a gritty action title that captures the era’s love for mythic swordplay. Its pixel‑perfect stages and moody soundtrack give it a distinct personality that still feels fresh when you fire up the console today.

What makes Dark Legend especially intriguing is how it’s widely regarded as the spiritual follow‑up to the PC Engine classic Makyo Densetsu (1988), known in the West as The Legendary Axe. The two games share a reverence for heroic quests and a similar visual flair, linking them across a decade of hardware evolution and cementing Ankoku Densetsu’s place in the lineage of legendary axe‑wielding adventures.
