Summary
Air Zonk (often just called Air Zonk) flips the classic Bonk universe into a bright, tongueāinācheek scrolling shooter. The game leans into a punkārock aesthetic, complete with a wacky theme song that blares whenever you post a massive score or meet an untimely end, and itās peppered with goofy enemy designs that keep the mood light even as you blast through five futuristic stages.
At the start you pick one of three difficulty settingsāsweet, spicy, or bitterāand decide how many friends youāll bring along. Companions range from an anthropomorphic gumball machine to a drillātopped mummy, each usable only once per level. Collect eight smileyāface icons to summon a friend, then another eight to merge into a hybrid form that grants 20 seconds of invulnerability and a unique, unāchargeable attack. While solo, Zonk can charge his shots for a stronger blast or hold a charge long enough to drop a screenāclearing bomb; seven different powerāups each have their own chargeābased special, though the MiniāZonk powerāup canāt be charged and behaves differently when hit.
King Drool, the familiar Bonk antagonist, leads a horde of cyberārobots that you must dodge and destroy, reinforcing the gameās ācute āem upā vibe. The blend of humor, flexible friend mechanics, and fastāpaced shooting makes Air Zonk a standout title that still feels fresh when revisited on modern Virtual Console releases.
The success of this quirky shooter spawned a sequel, Super Air Zonk: RockabillyāParadise, which expanded the soundtrack and added new levels, assistants, and enemies, cementing the seriesā cultāclassic status among retro enthusiasts.
