Summary
New Adventure Island feels like a love letter to the original platforming formula, but with a few cheeky twists that keep the pacing fresh. The familiar side‑scrolling action is paired with a choice of four weapons—axe, boomerang, arrows, and the rare fireball that only emerges from hidden eggs—so each run feels like a small tactical puzzle. Finishing a stage while riding a skateboard isn’t just a visual gag; it hands you a tidy bonus‑point boost that rewards daring momentum.
Hidden eggs are the game’s secret treasure chests, sometimes spawning a quirky PC Engine controller item that instantly adds 2,000 points to your tally. Those extra points feel like a nod to the console’s heritage, and hunting the eggs adds a layer of exploration beyond the standard jump‑and‑run.
Critics at the time praised the title’s crisp graphics and its faithful yet expanded take on the series, noting it would please longtime fans. Later re‑releases on the Virtual Console in 2007 and the PlayStation Network in 2011 introduced the same polished experience to new audiences, confirming that the game’s charm still holds up.
Storyline
In Adventure Island for the TurboGrafx‑16, Master Higgins and his new bride Tina are celebrating their wedding at the island church when the villainous Baron Bronsky crashes the ceremony. The baron kidnaps Tina along with six island children, scattering the youngsters across separate islands. Higgins must travel through six stages, each divided into four areas, with the fourth area serving as a boss fight. After rescuing each child, he confronts Baron Bronsky in his fortress for a final showdown to free Tina.
