Summary
1941: Counter Attack feels like a love letter to classic vertical shooters, but it flips a few conventions on their head. Instead of a traditional life count, the game uses a vitality bar – each hit chips away a point, and when it hits zero you’re forced to decide whether to continue, which even adds a tiny +1 to your score for the bold move. The B button unleashes a lightning strike that drains a slice of that vitality, letting you clear swarms at a price.
You can choose the sleek P‑38 Lightning for Player 1 or the Mosquito Mk IV for Player 2, and each stage lets you loop three times for extra points, with a bonus for any unused loops. The six levels march from the North Atlantic skies to the Brandenburg Gate, peppered with iconic WWII hardware like the Bismarck, Me‑262s and even a Horten Ho 229 boss.
Critics in Japan praised the arcade version’s tight action, and the SuperGrafx port earned strong fan scores. A 2021 Switch re‑release in Capcom Arcade Stadium gave a new generation a chance to test their reflexes against this historic aerial showdown.
