Summary
Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension (often just called Zool) feels like a high‑octane sprint through a neon‑lit arcade. The SNES version keeps the core fast‑running, wall‑climbing and shooting mechanics, but it swaps in its own set of levels, fresh background art and a handful of exclusive bosses that give the cartridge its own personality.
Power‑ups are the real spice: you can grab life‑spending hearts, unleash smart bombs, raise a shield, boost your jump or summon a "twin" Zool that mimics your moves a few seconds later, effectively doubling firepower. The options screen even lets you dial the difficulty and game speed up or down, choose how many continues you get, and flip the soundtrack between a rock‑heavy mix or a funk‑ier vibe.
Beyond the main run‑and‑gun action, the game hides several quirky minigames – a scrolling space shooter, a piano‑tune secret, and invisible warp points that reward exploration. The original spell‑casting idea was trimmed down to these collectible power‑ups, streamlining the experience without losing the sense of discovery.
Even though it was pitched as a Sonic rival, Zool’s charm lies in its relentless pace, the satisfying feel of the twin mechanic, and the way the SNES port adds its own visual flair while preserving the Amiga‑born soundtrack, remixed for the console’s sound chip.
Storyline
Zool – Ninja of the Nth Dimension follows the gremlin hero Zool, a self‑styled ninja hailing from the 2345th dimension. After an unexpected crash‑landing on Earth, he is compelled to prove his skill and earn a higher ninja ranking. The game’s structure is built around a series of realms: six distinct worlds, each split into three stages, and a total of seven lands that must be cleared. At the end of every land or world, Zool faces a unique boss that guards his progress. Defeating each boss and completing the stages unlocks the next challenge, driving the player toward the ultimate showdown.
