Summary
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (often just called ZAMN) feels like a love‑letter to ’80s horror flicks wrapped in a frantic run‑and‑gun playground. You can team up as Zeke or Julie, or both in two‑player mode, and the chaos erupts as you blast through suburban streets, malls, pyramids and haunted castles while trying to save a bizarre cast of neighbors.
The arsenal is delightfully over‑the‑top: an Uzi‑style water gun, bazookas, weed‑whackers, soda‑can explosives, ice‑pop shooters, silverware, crucifixes and even a Martian bubble gun, each with its own sweet spot against specific monsters. Power‑ups like speed‑boost potions or temporary monster transformations add a strategic layer to the mayhem.
Each of the 48 stages (plus seven hidden bonus levels) hides up to ten rescuable civilians, from cheerleaders to archeologists, and you must grab at least one before the door to the next area opens. Neighbors can be killed by enemy contact, turning them into permanent losses unless an “Extra Bonus Victim” appears, which keeps the tension high.
The game was built on the SNES before a midway port to the Genesis, reusing the ZAMN engine later for titles like Ghoul Patrol. A planned battery‑save feature was scrapped for cost reasons, and Nintendo forced blood to become purple ooze, while Europe and Australia saw the title trimmed to simply “Zombies.” Limited‑run SNES covers even sport a variant art piece.
Although it never became a blockbuster, the quirky humor and deep gameplay earned it a cult following, spawning the sequel Ghoul Patrol in 1994 and a 2021 collection release on modern consoles and PC.
Storyline
In Zombies Ate My Neighbors, the mad scientist Dr. Tongue has filled the depths of his castle with a bizarre menagerie of monsters. He releases these creations onto nearby suburban neighborhoods, turning ordinary streets into nightmarish battlefields.
Teenage friends Zeke and Julie witness the onslaught and grab whatever unconventional weapons and items they can find. Determined to protect their neighbors, they fight through hordes of creatures, eventually confronting Dr. Tongue himself and putting an end to his monstrous plans.
