Summary

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys flips the classic top‑down view into a vibrant side‑scrolling action stage, letting you steer Adad’s sword in eight directions and actually jump over gaps. The familiar ring‑based magic system returns, but now each ring drains ā€œRing Powerā€ and can grant on‑the‑fly boosts like healing pulses or defensive shields, while key items peppered throughout the routes serve as simple puzzle pieces. Stats, equipment upgrades, shop encounters, and the experience curve stay true to the series, but unlike its predecessors there’s no momentary invincibility frame for either hero or monster. The SNES port, released overseas in ’91, labels the villain’s stronghold ā€œBallacetine Castleā€ and earned mixed nostalgia scores—about 64 % on GameRankings, a 20/25 from GamePro, 15.2/20 in Nintendo Power, 81 % on RPGFan, and a C+ from EntertainmentĀ Weekly. All told, the title feels like a retro hybrid of action platforming and classic Ys role‑playing depth.

Storyline

Three years after Ys I and II, Adol Christin and his buddy Dogi return to Dogi’s hometown Redmont, only to learn the village is threatened by Valestein Castle. After freeing Mayor Edgar from a quarry, Adol finds a mysterious statue and learns from Elena that Lord MacGuire of Felghana is hunting the four ancient statues.

Adol retrieves the second statue from Illsburn Ruins, where he meets Father Pierre and Elena’s brother Chester, who tries to steal it. After a fire‑dragon battle and a cave‑in, Dogi rescues them and a mountain hermit—Dog’s old master—points the way to the fourth statue atop the mountain. The guardian is defeated and the final statue is claimed.

Back in Redmont, Edgar, MacGuire and Bishop Garland reveal the statues once sealed the demon Galbalan. Valestein soldiers kidnap townsfolk for the statues, forcing Adol to march on the castle.

Adol defeats Garland, confronts a repentant MacGuire, then follows Elena’s kidnapping to Galbalan’s island fortress. He bargains the statues, frees Galbalan, defeats him, and watches Chester sacrifice himself to sink the island.

At dawn, Adol and Dogi leave Redmont, while Elena confesses her love to Dogi before waving goodbye.
