Summary

Youkai Buster – Ruka no Daibouken is essentially a Japanese makeover of Sting’s earlier SNES title, The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates. When Kadokawa Shoten needed a fresh mascot for its Marukatsu Super Famicom magazine, they turned to Sting and asked for a tie‑in that would feature the new character Ruka and her accompanying mini‑manga. Rather than build a game from scratch, Sting swapped the Jetsons skin for a completely new set of sprites, artwork and music while keeping the original level layout and mechanics intact. The result is a familiar platforming experience wrapped in a distinctly Japanese aesthetic, created specifically to boost magazine sales and give Ruka a playable debut.

Storyline

Youkai Buster – Ruka no Daibouken follows the fiery teen‑aged demon girl Ruka‑chan, who may look like a high‑schooler but is actually over a millennium old. Her mission is to cleanse the world of the demons and monsters that have begun to cause chaos. Ruka reports to Enma, the Buddhist judge of souls who appears as a towering red oni in a crisp business suit and is jokingly nicknamed “Elvis” by his subordinate.

One night Enma’s body is stolen by a handsome stranger known only as “Body,” who plans to use it for his own nefarious schemes alongside an army of monsters. Stripped down to just his head, Enma angrily orders Ruka to retrieve his missing body, warning that failure will cost her own life as a replacement. The game’s story thus pits Ruka against a bizarre, otherworldly crime spree while she battles to save both her boss and herself.
