Summary
Xardion thrusts you into a three‑planet conflict where alien races set aside a centuries‑old war to face a far‑deadlier invader. You control Triton the robot, Panthera the cat‑like quadruped, or Alcedes the towering red insect, swapping at any moment; if a hero dies you start the level over with that character fully healed. Each form boasts its own strengths—Panthera can slip through narrow passages, Triton excels in firepower, and Alcedes crushes obstacles—so mastering the tag‑team is essential.
The game folds RPG mechanics into the platform action: defeating enemies grants experience, which raises your maximum life and special ability points. Health, ability gauges and upgrades are tracked separately for each robot, forcing you to juggle growth across the trio. Near the finale the composite mecha Xardion appears, inheriting every previous ability but starting at level one, prompting back‑tracking for extra experience to unlock its full potential.
Mecha legends Moriki Yasuhiro and Hajime Katoki crafted the designs, with Gainax adding flair, and Robert Woodhead penned the English script. Critics gave it mixed scores, but its hybrid gameplay still draws curiosity from retro‑gaming enthusiasts.
Storyline
The Alpha 1 Federation has been fighting for seven months across three worlds when a new threat emerges from the artificial planet NGC‑1611. Built by a scientist hoping to create an immortal world, the planet’s supercomputers were left with a lone directive—protect the scientist’s daughter—so they launched an invasion of the Alpha 1 system. In response, three champions are sent to NGC‑1611: the humanoid pilot Triton, the four‑armed mage‑bot Alcedes, and the cat‑like quadrupedal robot Panthera, each controlling a transforming mecha that can shift between a space‑fighter form and a giant robot.
Their mission is to locate and destroy the invaders’ power source while searching for the legendary weapon, Xardion. As they battle evolving monsters, Panthera is lost to a flood of hydrochloric acid, paving the way for the ultimate cyborg mecha, Xardion, to appear and replace it. Xardion’s arm‑mounted blast becomes the final hope to end the invasion and save the Alpha 1 Solar System.
