Summary
I still get goosebumps when I fire up X‑Men: Mutant Apocalypse on the SNES. Capcom merged the relentless beat‑‘em‑up feel of a classic arcade brawler with the occasional platforming jump, letting you chase through sprawling stages while swapping among Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Beast or Gambit at will. Each hero brings a signature move set – Cyclops’ ranged optic blast, Wolverine’s wall‑climb, Psylocke’s high‑jump agility, Beast’s ceiling‑cling and Gambit’s explosive card throws – all executed with button combos that feel straight out of Street Fighter II.
Levels are non‑linear; after beating a stage you get a password to return later, and a single pool of lives follows the whole squad. Boss fights punctuate every area, ranging from mechanised threats to iconic villains, and the final showdown lands you on Magneto’s Avalon space station.
Critics praised the game’s bold visuals, tough but fair difficulty and a memorable soundtrack, landing it on IGN’s Top 100 SNES list and earning it a spot among the most iconic Marvel titles. Even years later the game’s combo‑heavy combat and replay‑friendly stage order keep it a staple of retro‑gaming discussions.
Storyline
In X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Professor Charles Xavier dispatches five of his top X‑Men on a covert mission to Genosha. Their objective is to sabotage the island’s hostile installations and free the mutants held captive there. While infiltrating the complex they uncover a sinister alliance between Queen Brood, the massive mutant Tusk, and the ancient villain Apocalypse himself. After battling through these threats, the heroes succeed in liberating the prisoners.
Returning to the base, Xavier learns that Magneto plans to annihilate Genosha from his orbiting space station, Avalon. To ready the team, he puts them through a rigorous Danger Room trial, pitting them against holographic Omega Red and Juggernaut. Once they clear the simulation, the five X‑Men split up inside Avalon, confronting and defeating Exodus before confronting Magneto. Their combined effort thwarts the mastermind’s scheme and saves the island.
