Summary

WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game feels like a wild mash‑up of a classic fighting title and the over‑the‑top world of 1990s WWF. The eight digitized superstars—Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Doink the Clown, Lex Luger, Bam Bam Bigelow and Yokozuna—are guided by Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler’s commentary, while Howard Finkel welcomes you from the announcer’s table. What makes the game memorable are the cartoonish finishers: Doink pulls a mallet from thin air, Razor’s arm turns into a blade, and Bam Bam’s fists burst into flame, all while each wrestler “bleeds” a quirky object like Lex’s dumbbells or Hart’s valentine hearts.

The single‑player experience splits into two gauntlets. The Intercontinental Championship strings together solo bouts, 2‑on‑1 and 3‑on‑1 handicaps, whereas the WWF Championship ramps up the difficulty with more multi‑opponent rounds and a final gauntlet that forces you to clear the entire roster. Two‑player options let you duel head‑to‑head or team up in a tag‑team version of the gauntlet to claim the Tag Team Championship.

Porting quirks are obvious: the SNES version drops Bam Bam and Yokozuna, slows when three wrestlers share the ring, and trims voice samples, while the Genesis and 32X builds keep most commentary but still suffer slowdown. The PlayStation edition finally removes the lag, adds an intro by Finkel and WrestleMania theme music, but pares back background tracks. Critics loved the digitized humor and easy controls—GamePro gave the SNES a near‑perfect 19.5/20, EGM praised the PlayStation version with a 9/10, and the arcade was even the third‑most‑popular title in its heyday.
