Summary
World Heroes 2 on the SNES feels like a love letter to the original arcade hit, crammed into a massive 24‑megabit cartridge that lets the pixel‑perfect graphics and original soundtrack shine. The North American release even hides a secret code that unlocks the two boss characters, letting you step into Neo‑Geegus’s hulking frame or Dio’s final‑stage menace—something the arcade never offered.
The port keeps the classic three‑button layout and adds a few modern twists: you can now reflect projectiles, pull off counter‑grabs, and even reverse a throw if your timing is spot‑on. Death Match returns with its quirky seesaw lifebar, where each hit shifts the balance toward the opponent and forces a frantic button‑mashing scramble when the arrow hits the edge. Six fresh fighters—Captain Kidd, Johnny Maximum, Mudman, Ryoko Izumo, Shura Nai Khanomtom, and Erick—join the original roster, each bringing new moves and altered stats.
Critics gave the SNES version solid marks—EGM 37/50, GameFan 244/300, and GamePro 17/20—praising its faithful arcade translation, the breadth of character choices, and the adjustable speed settings that let you dial the action up or down to suit your taste.
Storyline
In World Heroes 2, Dr. Brown revives his time‑traveling fighting tournament to finally crown the strongest warrior in history. The previous edition was derailed when the mysterious entity Geegus crashed the event, leaving the result inconclusive.
This sequel brings back the eight original combatants and adds six fresh fighters drawn from different eras and locales, each eager to prove their might. Dr. Brown hopes the new lineup will produce an undisputed champion, but a new boss looms behind the tournament, waiting for the victor to confront it.
