Summary

Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom feels like a grand overhaul of the series’ engine. The game expands the classic mazes, adds fresh spells and new character classes, and builds a richer combat interaction system. For the first time you can bring over heroes from earlier scenarios—but you’re not forced to.

Originally shipped on Commodore 64, Apple II and PC in 1988, the title later hopped onto the Super Famicom and FM Towns before Capcom carried it to the SNES in 1993, even seeing a Satellaview broadcast as BS Wizardry 5. The FM Towns version even boasts an original orchestral score by Kohei Tanaka.

Critics were mixed: Dragon gave it four stars in 1989, praising its depth, while Computer Gaming World warned that heavy disk access made play feel sluggish. Compute! liked its newcomer friendliness despite CGA graphics limits, and GamePro called the SNES iteration dated, noting repetitive dungeons and a single save slot.

Storyline

Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom picks up after the peace forged by L'Kbreth's Orb begins to crumble. Strange weather and illness signal that the magical vortex deep beneath the Temple of Sages—known as the Maelstrom—is tearing reality apart. The High Council sends the player’s party to the cavernous maze, first to find G'bli Gedook, the Brotherhood’s high priest who guards the Orb. He directs them to descend through eight layers of twisting tunnels.

Along the way the adventurers must placate the four Card Lords by presenting each with its proper suit, a task that unlocks access to the vortex’s core. There they attempt to summon the demi‑god Gatekeeper, the only being powerful enough to seal the rift. The rogue sorceress called the Sorn has captured the Gatekeeper and seeks to expand the chaos into a new universe.

After a climactic battle the party defeats the Sorn, freeing the Gatekeeper who rewards them with the Heart of Abriel. Returning to the surface, the heroes restore order to Llylgamyn and close the Maelstrom. The game ends with the promise that new legends will rise from the restored kingdom.
